BBQ jack fruit burger  where a bun layered with creamy veggie slaw and full pack of shredded jack fruit which some called as pulled pork for vegan.Filling of burger is BBQ sauce  gives a mild sweet and spicy flavor.

Preparing jack fruit burger we need the main ingredient is tender green jack fruit.Clean and cut them into shapes.

Boil them in enough water in a pot or a pressure cooker(2 whistle over high flame,cool with out waiting for room temperature)adding little salt,until they get soft.If there is tender seeds inside then no need to throw them.

Dry all pieces and pull out or shred some of the jack fruit. Slice the rest using a knife or separate using hands until somewhat shredded. Remove any hard seeds if any .

I have made my own home made BBQ sauce with available ingredients.You can prepare it two way..

Either mix all the ingredient and cook until thick sauce Else cook on pan direct without mix them together and cook on medium flame until thick sauce

Once the pulled jack fruit combine well with BBQ sauce,i add rice flour to make the stuff little crunchy

Roasting on rice flour gives the jack fruit nice deeper brown colour.

Meanwhile you need to prepare slaw for burger.A slaw is nothing but a creamy salad which i made my own using Greek yogurt and shredded  veggies.

Even instead of slaw you can use creamy mayonnaise of your choice.Before layering  toss the burger.

Now its time to layer them.To be very honest,this recipe inspired me from web where i was searching a food for jack fruit for my husband who is a vegetarian.We love BBQ dishes and jack fruit which is always welcome by vegetarian too.

I have prepared these in my own ingredients and which turned out great.You can prepare and enjoy these burgers with less time than travel to restaurant or waiting for delivery  specially during these lock down.

things we need to prepare

  • 1 cup shredded jack fruit (250g)
  • 1 tsp ( onion,garlic) paste
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp finely chopped green chilies – optional
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala – (can use only cumin powder)
  • 1 tsp rice flour
  • salt

Homemade BBQ sauce

  • 2 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard sauce
  • 1 tsp chili sauce
  • 1/2 tsp apple cider vinegar

method 1

Heat a pan add ketch up and stir it.Then add all the ingredients one by one and keep stirring regularly.When it comes to bubble reduce to low heat.Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until thickened.

Allow to cool slightly and keep in a plate

Whisk together all ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Keep stirring and when it comes  to  bubble and then reduce the heat to low. Allow to simmer until thickened.

In a pan heat oil   add onion – garlic paste,saute it ,when raw smell goes off add garam masala, shredded jack fruit.Fry them well.

Add prepared BBQ sauce into it,combine them well.

Now sprinkle some rice flour over it,cook on lower flame.Stir frequently until  crunchy both the sides.It takes about 15 minutes.

preparing veggie slaw

  • 2 tbsp Greek yogurt
  • shredded veggies(i used raw papaya,beet root,onion,carrot)
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • salad seasoning
  • salt

In bowl pour yogurt along with handful of veggies .Mix all in a bowl .Add salt and some salad seasoning..Keep them aside.

Now cut buns into half and toss them slight.

Place generous portions of slaw on the bottom buns, top with generous serving of BBQ jack fruit.Serve warm and enjoy your meaty veg burger…
