A Falafel is a  deep fried fritter popular fast food of middle east.Egypt is the country where it is originated and made out of fava beans.Later it is popular in middle east food and made out of chick peas. originally it is made out of both fava beans and chick peas or some use both.There are different variation now a days available in different locations.

It is served as a sandwich, stuffed in pita with lettuce, tomatoes and tahini. As an appetizer,  on a salad, or with hummus and tahini. 

It was  one of the staple food of our family when we were lived in UAE .My husband is a vegan and he likes it most .

I am prepared it out of chickpeas and some of my own ingredients.chick peas falafel,red bean falafel,beetroot falafel,and mixed beans falafel. Well these are my own creations and taste good also.I hope you would like and prepare it. 

THINGS WE NEED TO PREPARE

for making chickpeas falafel..

  • 1 cup chick peas(soaked)
  • 1 onion
  • 4 to 5 garlic pods
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 clove
  • 4 to 5 green chilies
  • 2 to 3 pepper corn (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric (optional)
  • 1/2 cup parsley
  • 2 to 4 tsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp chickpeas powder(optional)
  • salt

for making beetroot falafel

  • 1/2 cup chickpeas (soak)
  • 1 beet root
  • 1/2 cup green peas
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1 onion
  • 2 to 3 garlic pods
  • 3 to 4 green chilies
  • a handful coriander leaves
  • 1 to 2 tsp chickpeas powder
  • salt

for making mixed beans falafel

  • 1 cup black eyed peas
  • 1/2 cup red cow peas
  • 1 onion
  • 4 to 5 garlic cloves
  • 2 tsp sesame seeds
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1 or 2 tsp chick peas powder
  • a handful parsley
  • salt

PREPARATION STEP BY STEP WITH PHOTOS

  • Soak chick peas for 8 to 9 hours(can soak overnight.).Drain and rinse the chick peas.
  • For chick peas falafel,in a  blender pulse all ingredients together except chick flour .You should pulse until a rough and coarse paste forms.Try to do without using water for that you need to stir the mixture frequently in the time of blending.
  •  Once the mixture reaches the desired consistency, pour it out into a bowl .If you have any  chunks then remove it.I am sure if you blend and stir frequently then there should not be any chunk inside. Cover the bowl  and refrigerate for 1 hour.You can keep it overnight .Keeping the mixture overnight gives best result.

STEP 2

  • Soak cow peas overnight.Drain and rinse the beans. Discard  and rinse the beans.

STEP 3

  • For mixed beans falafel you need to do the same process as chickpeas falafel. After blending keep in refrigerator .
  • For beet root  falafel also blend all the ingredients except chick flours and keep in refrigerator for 1 hour.

STEP 4

  • Fill a pan with  oil  and heat the oil slowly over medium heat.Mean while take ut all thee mixture from refrigerator and sit for 15 minutes.Now  form chick peas mixture into round ball,round shape patties,dump-bell shape.
  • Also do the same for beet mixture and beans mixture.
  • Before frying put a candy size of the mixture into the hot oil if the mixture not hold together  or the mixture loosing oil while frying then add some chickpeas flour into it.But for chickpeas falafel there is no such need for chick flours.
  • You can also shallow fry instead of deep fry the falafel balls.

STEP 5

  • I have used 1 to 2 tsp chick flours for beans falafel.

STEP 6

  • I have use 2 tsp of chick flours for beet root falafel to bind the mixture nicely.
  • If needed, You can use more if the mixture not bind properly. Try to use less chick-flours to get the taste of the rest of the ingredients.
  • Put 2 to 3 falafel balls first over high flame and turn all the sides. Then slow the flame and fry till crunchy and cooked properly inside.Fry rest of the balls until brown,crunchy and cook properly inside.

STEP 7

  • Remove all in a paper towel.

STEP 8

  • For making a pocket,cut pita bread into half.Stuff inside with some falafel,some garden fresh salads as you like.You can also add hummus,tahini sauce to make it a wholesome meal too.Add your choices of add- on to make it more fancy and enjoy it …
