Jack fruit kheer is a combination of yellow moong dal along with thick creamy coconut milk and paired with lots of dry fruits which makes the dish more unique and taste delicious too.

Well jack fruit is the first choice for every vegan and vegetarian. It’s a healthy vegan meat replacement. it’s one of the biggest food trends among vegetarians, vegans and even meat lovers .

Jack-fruits have heavy demand during festivals of Odisha like ‘Savitri Vrat’ and ‘Rajo’. However, the demand falls after these festivals.

In odisha there are two varieties are called kaadua kathal/panasa (soft version)  which are softer,moister and much sweeter with a dark gold colour flesh than the hard version.

Another one is  khajara kathal/panasa (Hard version) which are crunchier,less sweet and fleshier too..Its crunchy and sweetness are more popular than the soft version in odisha. The fruits are either eaten alone or as a side to mudi/muri.

During lock down,when there are less transportation,luckily my uncle sent a jack fruit of their own back yard in a bus.

It emits a pleasant smell which spread all over our home ,which means its ripen ans ready to eat.I love to watch while my father cutting it.I extract seeds from the bulb of jack fruits and collect seeds.Seeds are also healthy and use in preparing many dishes at home.

For preparing the kheer i have used hard version or khajra panasha/kathal.This is the jack fruit you can save for long time in refrigerator also.

Preparing the kheer you need to soak moong dal for at least 2 to 3 hours .Discard all its water and boil them in a pot with 1 cup of water and pinch of salt.You can add some more water to soft the dal. Always cook on lower flame to make the dal more soft and delicious.

In another pan heat ghee and fry cashews.When they turn to brown in colour take them out.

Chop jack fruit pieces into small pieces and fry them in the same pan.When they start to squeeze,add sugar.Keep stirring  over high flame.

Add boiled moong dal and cardamom powder into it and keep stirring.You can use more dry fruits of your choices.

Add home made thick coconut milk.You can use can coconut milk too.It gives rich consistency to the kheer and reduce the fruity smell of the ripe jack fruit also.

Jack fruit kheer is a very quick and easy recipe.If you have  ripe jack fruit  then you can prepare it for any festival also.

At the end you can garnish with fried cashews. For best result store in refrigerator until cold and serve chilled.

things we need to prepare

  • 150 g yellow moong dal(split yellow moong pulse)
  • 2 cups thick coconut milk
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups ripe jack-fruit(finely chopped)
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder
  • ghee
  • cashews
  • dash of salt


Soak moong dal in enough water for 3 to 4 hours.Rinse and discard all its water.

In a pot add moong dal and 1 cup of water along with pinch of salt to cook over medium flame for 15 minutes or until soft.

In another pan heat heat 1 tbsp of ghee, fry cashews and take them out.In the same pan fry chopped jack fruits when they soft enough add sugar into it.Fry them well.

Now add cooked dal,cardamom powder into it.Pour coconut milk and cook on high flame until get a thick consistency.

Off the gas and garnish with fried cashews. Refrigerate and serve chilled.
