A street food popular as evening snack selling in push cart served in a newspaper rolled into a cone which is popular in  local language as thunga.Street vendors has a mug and along with puffed rice,mustard oil,green chilies,onions,sprouts and many more spices shaking in the mug before serving in thunga .

Not only in Odisha,its popular among in all over  Indian street foods.Its very light and found in every nook and corner of the city with vendors selling on cycle.

 things we need to prepare

  •   2 cups puffed rice/mudi/muri/murmura
  •  1/2  cup chanachur-i have used Haldiram  chanachur (instead use any local mixture or gathia / sev…as you desire)
  •  1/2 cup each( boiled peanuts, boiled yellow dried peas)
  •   a handful sprouted ( green gram/moong), black chick peas /kala chana) )-optional
  •  2 onions-finely chopped
  •  2 tomatoes-finely chopped
  •  2 tsp chopped green chilies
  •  2 tsp mustard oil
  •  2 tsp  lemon juice
  •  1 tsp lemon pickle juice – any pickle you like
  •  jhar muri masala – 1 tsp each(rock salt, roasted cumin power, chat masala )

1/2 tsp each (red chili powder,  white pepper powder)

combine all spices to form a dry jharr muri masala powder.

For jhal muri main ingredients of course is muri which should be crunchy always.So before go for the dish,fry them once over medium flame to  maintain the crunchiness.

Keep ready things finely chopped onions,tomatoes,green chilies.

Take a large bowl add boiled peanuts,peas mix them well.

You can also add sprouts.


Add chopped onions,tomatoes,green chilies and combine them well.

Add muri and chanachur along with pickles and slight salt.Use your hand is the best option to stir them well.


At the end squeeze lemon and drizzle mustard oil, use your  hand to combine all the spices .

Its ready to serve now.For getting  feeling of street food you can serve them in a paper cones.


I don’t like to add any other spices but if you would like to add jhar muri masala  to enhance your taste buds then sprinkle 1 tsp of the prepared jhal muri masala on  prepared muri and enjoy the fast food at your home.
