Spinach dal(palang Dali) is a popular and savored dish made with combination of toor dal and spinach.One of the well known dish in odisha and all around the India as well.

 Here’s a simple way of making this dish more aromatic by tampering mustard seeds,fennel seeds and crushed garlic buds.The aroma of this delicacy will salivate you to boost your hunger.

So let’s start to prepare another typical delicacy of ODISHA.

  INGREDIENTS

  • 500g spinach leaves(Baby spinach leaves)
  • 250g toor dal (yellow pigeon lentils)
  • water
  • Salt
  • ½ tsp turmeric

FOR TAMPERING

  • ½ tsp. mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp. cumin seeds
  • ¼ th tsp. fennel seeds
  • 8 to 9 crushed garlic cloves
  • 3 to 4 green chilies (slited)

STEP BY STEP PREPARATION OF PALAK DAL

STEP 1

In palak dal i have used baby spinach which gives rich taste to the dal. If not available you can use matured spinach.

Cut the stems of the spinach and thoroughly rinse them. Strain the leaves and keep them a side

STEP 2

If you are using baby spinach then no need to chop them.Else finely chop the spinach leaves.

STEP 3

In the meanwhile rinse dal thoroughly and soak in 2 cups of water for half an hour

STEP 4

In a pressure cooker add dal with 2 cups of water, salt, and turmeric.

Steam it for 10 minutes on medium flame till 3 to 4 whistles or dal gets soft. There should be no separate grain visible.

Now heat off the gas and let the pressure cold naturally.

Check out the consistency else add some water and cook until the dal start to boil

STEP 5

In pan heat 2 tsp oil and add mustard seeds,fennel seeds,green chilies when they spluttered add crushed garlic.

STEP 6

Fry on medium flame till garlic turns light brown then add spinach leaves.

Stir it till the spinach leaves its colour, pour  dal and cover it quickly.

Now serve with Roti or steamed rice..
