A north indian dish where grilled paneer  served in gravy made out of  rich indian spices .A best appetiser for your family get together or any time picnic.

It goes well with steamed rice,nan or roti..

Though its paneer tikka,but i have prepared it with grilled paneer,capsicum,onion and green chilies.You can prepare it using only paneer .

Always use best quality paneer for any kind of paneer dish.Cut the paneer into slight thick cube shaped.Cut capsicum and onion into cubes.Slit green chilies.

I have used roasted gram flour/besan for marination.It not only enhance the taste but also gives nice aroma to the grilled paneer.

Mix paneer pieces with pinch of red chili powder,salt in a bowl and keep it for 10 minutes.Now add  curd,turmeric,ground paste,gram four,garam masala  to the bowl.Heat mustad oil and allow to smoke.It will help you to remove the bitterness of mustard oil.

Drizzel it over the marinated paneer pieces,combine all together and marinade for 30 to 35 minutes.Marination helps paneer to soak all the spices inside.

In a pan heat oil and butter.Add star anise,bay leaf when they turned to brown,add fennel seeds,cumin seeds,pour finely chopped onions.No need to fry onions till brown,you just need to shallow fry then add garlic and saute it.Add tomatoes,cashews and red chili powder,fry them till tomatoes get slight soft.Now add 1 cup of water and salt into it.Cook on medium flame until tomatoes are get mushy or for 8 to 9 minutes.Cool  it and blend to form a smooth fine mixture.

Always blend in small batches, so that it will easy to blend and the paste will be come out fine and smooth too.

Now pour the mixture in a pan and add 2 cups of water into it.Cook on medium flame.Check the gravy for adding salt.Let the gravy cok for 3 to 4 minutes over medium flame.

After 30 minutes,heat up a pan add butter and oil.Place one by one paneer and rest of the veggies .

Grill them on medium flame,turn them carefully else paneer cubes will be broken.Do grill until both the sides are brown.

Now add all  grilled paneer cubes along with veggies.Cook on medium flame for some seconds and off the gas.

thigs we need to prepare

  • 200 g paneer (slice into thick cubes)
  • 1 capsicum (slice into cubes)
  • 1 large onion (slice into cubes)
  • 3 to 4 green chilies (slitted)

tikka masala preparation

  • 1 tbsp butter cubes
  • 3 to 4 medium tomatoes -seeded,chopped
  • 1 handful cahsews
  • 2 medium onions – chopped
  • 6 to 7 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • 3 to 4 cloves
  • 1 star anise
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder( can use green chilies)
  • 1 cup water
  • oil
  • salt
  • garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek leaves

paneer tikka marination 

  • paneer cubes
  • 1/2 cup hung curd/greek yogurt
  • 1.5 tbsp gram flour/besan
  • 1 tsp ground paste(ginger-garlic-green chili paste)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder 
  • 1 tsp garam masla
  • 1 tbsp mustard oil
  • salt


Cut paneer into thick cubes.Smear it with pinch of red chili powder and salt for 10 minutes.

In a pan fry besan or gram flour for 1 minute or nice aroma comes out.Let it cool .

Now add hung curd,roasted gram flour,ground paste,garam masala into the marinated paneer cubes and mix well.

Heat mustard oil until smokes come out and cool it.Drizzle it over paneer cubes and combine all nicely.Keep them for marination atleast 30 minutes.

Mean while heat oil in a pan.Add star anise,bay leave.When they turned to brown add onions fry slight until light pink,add cuin seeds,fenel seeds and saute for seconds.Add garlic,cashews,cloves,turmeric,red chili powder and saute it .Add one cup of water and boil until tomatoes are get mushy.

Cool it and blend to form a smooth paste.Discard the star anise.

Heat the same pan add the blended puree,add 2 cups of water and allow it to cook for around 2mins over medum flame.

Heat another pan pour butter and 2 tsp oil,add grilled or fried paneer cubes until both the sides are get brown.The paneer cubes are very delicate ,you should do it little careful to avoid breaking it.Do the same for rest of the marination.

Now add carefully one by one into the pan.Cook for another 1 minute or till gravy get a desired consistancy.

Now serve your Paneer  tikka masala garnishing wih chopped coriander leaves.
