Yellow dried peas curry is a simple and easy cook gravy recipe. One of the most popular dish in odia cuisine which most of the time served in the time of festival with poori or paratha  because of restriction of sattvic food.

Its a simple vegetarian staple dish of odisha very common and popular dish poori chana tarkari.. People love to serve it with poori, so it is recognised as poori tarkari in most of the places of odisha. A healthy and light dish good to pair  any fried snacks like samosa, vada, etc. as well

Yellow dried peas are generally available in most of the store in a sealed plastic bag .Its advisable to eat always fresh food but dried version of peas these whole yellow peas are rich source of fiber. These tiny yellow peas one of the mighty member of legume help reduce cholesterol but also managing blood sugar and  heart healthy nutrients ..

Dried yellow peas is a starchy and flavourful pure vegetarian/vegan curry simmered with aroma of  hing / asafoetida make the dish incredibly rich and   flavoursome. Its a good kick start of vegan diet without the use of any animal produced ingredients and suitable in any vegetarian food.

Before preparing dried peas, you need to rinse them thoroughly. They need to soak in cold water for at least  eight hours or over night is the best option. When the peas are swollen enough, you can either use pressure cooker or pot to boil. In pot boiling the peas takes about an hour to cook ,so choose pressure is the best idea and saving time though

Boil in pressure cooker until soft completely is the main method of the dish, most people use gram four to thick the dish .To avoid using gram flour ,you need to boil on lower flame until 4 to 5 whistles or peas are mushy completely.

In a heavy bottomed pan heat oil and slowly add all the ingredients over slow flame. Though we are cooking with out onion/garlic there are a possibilities of burning the spices which i usually faced a lot. So always slow the flame and take few seconds the spices to produce aroma over lower flame.

Now add boiled peas and stir to coat with the spices.

Add 2 cups of water and cook over medium. The dried peas are starchy enough if they boiled completely or over cooked. So it takes around 6 to 7 minutes to thick the gravy. No need to add any substitute to enhance the thickness of the gravy.

Things we need to prepare

  • 250g yellow peas
  • 1 bay Leaf
  • 3 to 4 cloves
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp ginger paste
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  •  water
  • garam masala
  • oil
  • salt
  • chopped coriander leaves -optional


After rinse ,soak yellow peas in enough water over night or at least 8 hours in a large bowl. When the peas swollen enough , drain the water.

In a pressure cooker or any pot boil peas adding 1.5 cups of water, cloves, salt and bay leaf. Steam the peas over lower flame at least 4 to 5 whistles or until soft completely.

The peas must be over cooked or  mushy. Allow the cooker to cool and keep it a side.

In a pan heat oil (3tsp) over medium flame splutter mustard seeds and curry leaves. Add red chili ,ginger paste, red chili powder, turmeric, asafoetida ,garam masala as well over lower flame to avoid burning the spices.

Now pour the boiled yellow peas and stir it. Add 2 cups of water and cook over medium flame until get a thick gravy.

Sprinkle chopped coriander before serving on plate.
